ACTIVITIES (optional)

Among the unspoiled countryside with rocky outcrops, astonishing wooded gorges and frothy mountain streams (plus many lizards, geckos, butterflies ...), we offer different activities run by professionally equipped and experienced companies.

HORSE-RIDING:

Our guide Jose Luis, with great respect and knowledge for his horses and the environment, has prepared the following routes:

• Routes along the numerous streams. (Duration flexible depending upon requirements.)
• Full-moon riding (nocturnal ridings). From 12.00 am to 3-4 am or all night.
• The route of the blossoming cherry tree (at the beginning of April, with awesome views of the mountains being “snowed by flowers”). Three or four hours.
• Horse-riding along all the different villages around La Vera, with visits to museums. Two days route.
• The route of Charles V. One day.
• Visit to the Natural Park of Monfragüe. One day.
• Any other route can be planned according to specific requirements

Prices: £28.00, £58.00 or £85.00 (depending on length of trip)

TREKKING:

For more serious walkers and for those passionate about wilderness, short or long treks (one hour to all day) are available for this rare chance to explore a virgin landscape and some of the most spectacular places in La Vera.

You will have the chance to enjoy the varied and wild flora and fauna (as featured on TV by Michael Portillo in “Portillo Goes Wild in Spain ”): the area is renowned for its many rare species (visit this website for further details).

The scenery is quite outstanding, woods of oak and chestnut, long dramatic views, meadows, streams ...the whole sensuality of the place is remarkable

SPANISH LESSONS:

A native, well-qualified teacher - experienced in teaching Spanish - will make a delight of learning! This will not be your boring classical lesson: we will learn, live and enjoy the language: practical lessons, games, gymkhanas, fun tasks and the chance to put straight into practice what you have learned (...and be very welcomed by everyone for doing so!).

Price: £10.00 per hour

ARCHERY:

It is always a good time to test our skills in new disciplines. Show Robin Hood how you can do it too!

Our guides are experienced with groups and individuals and will guarantee that you have an enjoyable time. Bow and arrows provided (sorry, Kevin Costner not available for tutorials).

Price: £22.00 for one hour's session

CANOEING:

Along the beautiful river Tietar (named one of the best preserved rivers in Europe by Adenex and SEO Birdlife). Trees over 100 years old can be admired in their banks: ash, alder, hackberry tree, willows, osier beds…

Beginners and the more experienced are welcomed. Short and longer trips offered on a safe and beautiful stretch of water. If your interest is avian, then our guide Josemi is the man for you (we saw bee-eaters, a black stork and sand martins!). All ages welcomed. Trips from one to eight hours (with picnic included for the long ones).

Prices: £25.00 (4 km, two-and-a-half hours), £30.00 (8 km, three-and-a half hours), £35.00 (11 km, five hours), £45.00 (22 km, seven hours)

BIRDWATCHING ROUTES IN A 4x4:

If you are keen about avian species, our guide will share his enthusiasm with you!

You will be taken to the most interesting routes depending on the time of the year and the chances of seeing specific birds. La Vera is well known for its fascinating collection of rare species (e.g. black stork).

Trips are made around the area of La Vera or in the National Park of Monfragüe .

MOUNTAIN BIKE ROUTES:

Lead by a fit ex-participant of bike races and an excellent La Vera nature interpreter. We will adapt to your rhythm for you to enjoy the breathtaking gorges that come down from Sierra de Gredos and the beautiful landscapes of olive trees, wild flowers and mountains.

Mountain bikes provided.

Price: £25.00 half day

NOTES:

• We cannot guarantee an English translation when any optional activities are being taken unless other group members agree to join in as a majority (ask for details of specific trips). However, sheets with instructions in English for these activities will be provided.
• To ensure flexibility in changing plans, a fee for these activities will be paid to Holidays with Heart at the end of the day that the activity takes place.
